This past Monday, April 27th, was a P.A. Day devoted to Math.
We were able to share one classroom practice with the use of the Minecraft App. This App had to be purchased, but was well worth it.
Students at this age level are already comfortable playing in Minecraft; in fact, they know more than the teachers do. The connections to Math are limitless. We posed a problem regarding perimeter, area and volume, and the students were asked to build their own rectangular structures and apply formulas that they already knew.
Students were then asked to take a screen shot of their structure and their math strategies, and create a page in Book Creator. Their pages were then airdropped to the teacher iPad and a Book was born!
During this period, the students were engaged, and went beyond the rectangular structure. Who knew that so much Math could be learned while playing in Minecraft?
This lesson was highlighted as just one example of how kids using Minecraft in Math are highly engaged.
This lesson was also used during the P.A. Day to share with teachers how Minecraft can be used, particularly for those teachers who are reluctant to use such apps. One message learned was that it is okay that students may know more about these apps than we, the teachers, know!
